New Work, First Heard Here
Five world premieres deepen this year’s lineup, ranging from intimate and spiritual to interdisciplinary and boldly expansive. Idit Shner’s Opening and Closing brings bass clarinet, ancient Jewish melodic traditions, and contemporary jazz into a reflective new work, while Noah Simpson’s Unsound pairs live improvisation with real-time visual art. Grant Richards premieres music from his forthcoming Orbits Trio release, Andrew Jones expands Jones & I through adventurous composition and live painting with MOsley WOtta, and Shelly Rudolph’s Orfea Rising unfolds as an immersive jazz myth suite shaped by voice, poetry, movement, and chamber textures.

The project invites composers and performers to respond to original artworks through newly created music, creating a dynamic exchange between visual and sonic expression.
For this presentation, visual artist Adam Richards is paired with composer/performer John Niekrasz, visual artist Davis Wohlford with composer/performer Maria E. Olaya, and visual artist Joni Smith with composer/performer Kennedy Verrett. Together, these collaborations highlight interpretation, shared authorship, and the creative voices of artists across disciplines.

Shadow Work began as a cycle of songs written late at night while Rebecca Sanborn’s young daughter slept—quiet, focused hours that shaped the project’s intimate and introspective core. Developed over several years and arranged for the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble by Douglas Detrick, the work has evolved through live performance, collaboration, and a large-scale recording process involving a wide network of musicians. Exploring the relationship between dreams and waking life, Shadow Work reflects a deeply personal journey toward integration and wholeness, brought to life through rich ensemble textures and collective artistry.

Their current program features material from Sermon of the MatriarK, a work inspired by Afro-diasporic folklore that merges rhythmic intensity, experimental textures, and compositional depth. Known for their electrifying live performances, W4RP integrates elements such as custom lighting design and live scoring to film, creating an immersive concert experience that expands beyond traditional jazz presentation.
