Schedule Announced for Montavilla Jazz Festival 2016
Explore new frontiers in jazz with top local artists, August 20-21, 2016 at Portland Metro Arts, day passes $10-$25
PORTLAND, Oregon—June 29, 2016-One of Portland’s most celebrated jazz performers and composers, multi-instrumentalist George Colligan, will headline Montavilla Jazz Festival 2016. Now in its third year, the festival features local jazz artists on the forefront of creative expression.
What is jazz? More importantly, where is it headed? At the Montavilla Jazz Festival (MJF), the future of the art form is at the forefront of the experience. With local Portland artists from across the spectrum of musical expression, attendees will hear from pioneers creating new frontiers in jazz.
Now in its third year, MJF 2016 will be hosted at Portland Metro Arts, 9003 SE Stark Street in Portland, Oregon, on August 20–21, 2016. General admission day passes will be available for purchase at the box office only during festival hours. Passes are sold on a sliding scale from $10-$25, and a portion of ticket sales benefit the Montavilla Schools Music Fund. As a project of the Montavilla Neighborhood Association, MJF’s mission is to support local artists while creating an accessible cultural experience for all.
“The artists featured at this year’s festival are truly creating new frontiers in jazz,” said Fritz Hirsch, managing director of MJF. “Our goal is to support local jazz artists and provide a wonderful cultural experience for the community while shining a light on the need for music education. With the support of the Montavilla Neighborhood Association, SE Uplift, festival sponsors, and the work of many volunteers, we are honored to present a dynamic music festival that is as unique as the city of Portland.”

Montavilla Jazz Festival 2016 Features Local Artists with World-Class Talent
This year, the festival will feature one of Portland’s most celebrated jazz performers and composers, multi-instrumentalist George Colligan. As the headliner for both nights, Colligan will perform on the opening night with the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble, unveiling a new composition, Fathers and Sons. He’ll then take the stage on the second evening in a piano trio setting with Boris Kozlov (bassist, arranger, and musical director for the Mingus Big Band) and Rudy Royston (drummer for Bill Frisell, Less McCann, and Ravi Coltrane).
Additionally, top artists on the Portland jazz scene will be performing throughout the festival. Highlights include Trio Uncontrollable featuring guitarist Dan Balmer; Jeff Baker–Phrases featuring pianist Darrell Grant; Batida Diferente featuring pianist and composer Kerry Politzer; and Scenes, featuring guitarist John Stowell, bassist Jeff Johnson, and drummer John Bishop.

We are thrilled to perform with Portland’s legendary pianist and composer, George Colligan, and unveil his new composition, Fathers and Sons. The audience will be in for an adventure as we guide them on a journey of deeper understanding and expression of paternal relationships and family, which are often filled with a wide range of emotions.”

Arts for All Program Keeps the Festival Accessible to Everyone
As one of America’s original art forms, jazz music has a strong legacy of being created by the people, for the people. It is important for the Montavilla Neighborhood Association to continue the tradition by helping to make the festival accessible to everyone.
This year, the Montavilla Jazz Festival is proud to become a member of the Arts for All program, administered by the Regional Arts and Culture Council. Anyone enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is eligible to purchase up to two (2) Montavilla Jazz Festival passes for $5 per pass when they present their SNAP Oregon Trail Card at the box office.
