Having led or co-led more than 65 recordings and performed with numerous jazz legends, David Friesen is among Portland’s elder statesmen of jazz. He is also a Northwest native and resident of Montavilla. Performing music that is incredibly original, his compositions operate on a high emotional level and are characterized by lyricism, spontaneity, and intense warmth. Friesen also devotes significant energy to teaching, focusing on helping younger musicians develop their own voice and thereby achieve excellence in musical expression.
