Mike Gamble is a multi-instrumentalist who works with electronic modes of composition and has spent the last fifteen years immersed in the creative jazz, experimental rock, and improvised music scene, primarily in New York City. He has recorded over twenty albums and toured the United States, Canada, and Europe with his critically acclaimed guitar trio, the Inbetweens, and Counter Record’s Cougar and alongside doom-metal originators Earth. Collaborators have been Bobby Previte, Todd Sickafoose, Nels Cline, and Lori Goldston. Since relocating to Portland, Gamble has run a monthly audiovisual series encouraging local and touring artists to play rare solo, duo, and trio sets with his audio-reactive projection setup. Gamble teaches audio production at Oregon State University and is the artistic director of the Creative Music Guild.
Wayne Horvitz is a composer, pianist, and electronic musician who has performed throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. He is the leader of the Gravitas Quartet, Sweeter Than the Day, Zony Mash, and the Four Plus One Ensemble and is cofounder of the New York Composers Orchestra. Collaborators include Bill Frisell, Butch Morris, John Zorn, George Lewis, Robin Holcomb, Fred Frith, Julian Priester, Michael Shrieve, Gus Van Sant, and Carla Bley. Commissioners include the NEA, Meet the Composer, Kronos String Quartet, Seattle Chamber Players, BAM, and Earshot Jazz. He’s received two MAP grants and the NEA American Masterpiece award. Horvitz is the music programmer for the Royal Room in Seattle and a professor of composition at the Cornish College of the Arts.
For over twenty years, the Creative Music Guild (CMG) has been an all-volunteer Portland nonprofit whose mission is to promote experimental, improvised music by presenting concerts, workshops, and other events that bring together internationally recognized musicians with local performers and audiences.
